The Marangu Route is a popular and cost-effective option for climbers, offering mountain huts instead of tents for overnight stays. This route takes you directly to the summit and back down, following the same path. Due to significant altitude changes each day, it’s best suited for experienced climbers.
The typical ascent on the Marangu route spans five days. However, for better acclimatization, we recommend adding an extra day to your journey. This extra night at the Horombo Huts on Day 4 allows your body to adjust to the altitude, with an optional acclimatization hike. This additional day greatly improves your chances of successfully reaching the summit.

Our adventure kicks off as your guide takes you from the hotel to Marangu Gate. The journey starts with scenic coffee and banana plantations before leading you through a lush rainforest. After about a seven-hour hike, you will reach the Mandara Huts. In the afternoon, you can either rest or take a short hike to the beautiful Maundi Crater for panoramic views. Stay hydrated as your body adjusts to the altitude!
Day 3
Marangu Route (2/5) | Mandara Huts (2,720 m/8,923 ft) - Horombo Huts (3,720 m/12,204 ft)
Leaving Mandara Huts behind, the landscape transitions from thick forest to open grasslands and heather-covered terrain. As you ascend, vegetation becomes sparse, and the surroundings take on a striking, lunar-like appearance. The air gets thinner, so pace yourself and drink plenty of water. In the afternoon, you can take an acclimatization hike before dinner and overnight at Horombo Huts.

Before dawn, you’ll begin your final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa! Equipped with headlamps, you’ll make your way up to Gilman’s Point, the toughest section of the climb. From there, the summit is within reach! As you stand atop Uhuru Peak, take in the breathtaking sunrise and capture the moment of a lifetime. After celebrating this incredible achievement, you’ll descend back through Kibo Camp to Horombo Huts for a well-earned rest.
Day 6
