THE ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK
Discover Arusha National Park – Tanzania’s Hidden Gem
Arusha National Park
A Landscape Like No Other
What makes Arusha National Park stand out is its dramatic variety of scenery packed into just 552 square kilometers. From the lush montane forests of Mount Meru—the park’s towering centerpiece—to the sparkling Momella Lakes, and the Ngurdoto Crater, often called the “Little Ngorongoro,” the park feels like a mini-version of Tanzania itself.
Mount Meru (4,566 meters) is Africa’s fifth-highest peak and offers challenging but rewarding treks with panoramic views of Kilimanjaro.
Momella Lakes are alkaline lakes famous for their large flocks of flamingos and other waterbirds.
Ngurdoto Crater is a forested caldera teeming with buffalo, warthogs, and monkeys.
Wildlife Encounters
Despite its size, Arusha National Park is rich in wildlife. While it’s not a Big Five destination, you’ll still encounter:
Giraffes, zebras, buffalo, and warthogs
Blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys (rarely seen in other parks)
Hippos, waterbucks, and reedbucks near the lakes
Over 400 species of birds
What’s unique here? Walking safaris and canoe safaris offer close-up encounters with nature that are not possible in Tanzania’s larger parks.
Best Time to Visit: June to October (dry season for wildlife viewing), but it’s open year-round.
