Tanzania Weather
Tanzania’s weather varies across regions, but there’s always a great time to visit! The coastal areas, including Zanzibar, are hot and humid, while the northern and highland regions are cooler due to higher altitudes. Average daytime temperatures range from 22°C to 31°C, and nights can drop to 10°C–22°C. Zanzibar enjoys a tropical climate year-round thanks to its proximity to the Equator.
Tanzania Weather: The Seasons
Tanzania experiences two main seasons: the dry season and the wet (rainy) season.
- Wet season (rainy season):
- Short rains: late October – December
- Long rains: late March – early June
The rains usually arrive in the late afternoon and continue overnight. While heavy, they bring a magical, lush vibrancy to the landscape that’s unique to Tanzania.
- Dry season:
- Ideal for road travel and wildlife spotting, with sunny days and minimal rain.
Can I Go on Safari During the Rainy Season?
Absolutely! Major media companies like National Geographic and Discovery often film in Tanzania during the rainy season because the environment comes alive. Benefits include:
- Lush, green landscapes and abundant wildlife
- Cooler temperatures for more comfortable safaris
- Fewer tourists, offering a more private experience
- Lower costs for lodges and safari accommodations
Challenges include occasional road difficulties (mainly in southern parks) and some lodges being closed during the low season.
Best parks to visit during the rainy season:
- Serengeti National Park
- Ngorongoro Crater
- Tarangire National Park
- Lake Manyara National Park
- Lake Natron
- Arusha National Park
Parks better avoided during the rainy season:
- Nyerere National Park
- Ruaha National Park
- Mikumi National Park
- Udzungwa Mountains National Park
How Does Tanzania Weather Affect Wildlife?
Rainfall creates lush landscapes and attracts high concentrations of animals, making wildlife spotting easier and more rewarding.
- Animals are more active and spread out thanks to abundant food and water
- Cooler temperatures protect animals from the harsh sun
- Birdwatching is excellent during the rainy season, as migratory species arrive in large numbers
Many of our guests report a more intimate and unique safari experience during the rainy season, with vibrant scenery and flourishing wildlife.
