The Marangu Route is the only route on Mount Kilimanjaro with hut accommodations, making it a great choice for those who prefer a solid roof over their heads instead of tents. It’s also one of the shortest summit routes, but that means less time to acclimatize so a pre- and post-night at hotel is included for better preparation and recovery.

Itinerary Details

  • Pickup from Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha

  • Transfer to hotel in Moshi

  • Pre-climb briefing with your mountain guide

  • Gear check and final preparation
    Overnight: Hotel in Moshi (B&B)

Drive to Tarangire National

  • Drive to Marangu Gate (approx. 1.5 hrs)

  • Begin your trek through rainforest

  • 4–5 hours hiking
    Overnight: Mandara Hut
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Park
Overnight at Eileen's Trees Inn

Drive to Tarangire National Park. Known for its massive baobab trees and large elephant herds, this park offers a wild, off-the-beaten-path safari experience. Enjoy expertly guided game drives, sundowners overlooking the river.  The slower pace and fewer crowds make Tarangire a hidden gem.

  • Hike through moorland landscape with stunning views of Mawenzi

  • 5–7 hours trekking
    Overnight: Horombo Hut
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Optional hike to Zebra Rocks (3,980 m)

  • A crucial day for altitude adjustment
    Overnight: Horombo Hut

  • Hike through alpine desert with a slow pace

  • 5–6 hours trekking

  • Early dinner and rest for summit night
    Overnight: Kibo Hut
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Midnight start for summit push via Gilman’s Point

  • Reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa

  • Descend back to Horombo Hut

  • 12–14 hours of hiking
    Overnight: Horombo Hut
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Descend through the rainforest back to Marangu Gate

  • Return transfer to Moshi hotel
    Overnight: Hotel in Moshi
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
